The Mission Statement of Howard University, quoted below, describes the institution’s central aim and purposes:

Howard University is a comprehensive, research-oriented, historically Black, private university providing an educational experience of exceptional quality to students of high academic potential with particular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities to promising Black students. Further, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who, through their teaching and research, are committed to the development of distinguished and compassionate graduates and to the quest for solutions to human and social problems in the United States and throughout the world.

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (or Athletics Department) is promulgated in order to complement and provide comprehensive and integral support to others activities and the mission of the University. This mission is articulated in the following Mission Statement:

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is an integral part of the University and is broad in scope and diversity. It endeavors to offer a variety of opportunities for qualified students in athletic competition, training and support activities. The department is obliged to attract dedicated administrators, coaches and staff committed to recruiting promising student-athletes and developing disciplined and inspired graduates who will provide leadership in solving human and social problems in the nation and the global community.
