Carey Bailey is entering his third season as Head Football Coach at Howard. Bailey, a Morgantown, W.V. native, has 15 years of coaching experience and a proven track record, especially in recruiting and leading winning teams.

Bailey put his signature on the program in his first season as the Bison led the MEAC and ranked high in the nation in time of possession.

In just his second season under the helm, Brian Johnson, Jarahn Williams and Rudy Hardie received All-Conference honors.'

In 2008-09, Endor Cooper was named the preseason MEAC Player of the Year and Willie Carter wrapped up the regular season as the league's Rookie of the Year.

Before coming to Howard, Bailey served as the University of Minnesota's defensive line coach and exemplified his expertise as the Gophers led the nation in turnover margin (+1.33 per game). That figure represents the highest turnover margin of any Big Ten school since 1998 and the first for Minnesota since 1989.

Prior to coaching at Minnesota, Bailey has coached for schools including Oklahoma State, Middle Tennessee State University (MSTU), Louisiana-Lafayette and Virginia Military Institute. He also served on the coaching staff at West Virginia University.

Student and faculty representatives from the athletics department were present to welcome Coach Bailey as this exciting news was officially announced to the University and the community.

Other highlights of Bailey's coaching career include:

  • Leading three of the Gophers four defensive linemen to Big Ten accolades in 2005
  • Minnesota's defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery was an All-Big Ten selection and was later drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins
  • Defensive ends (Minnesota) Steve Davis and Keith Lipka both each earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in 2005. Davis tied for the team lead with nine tackles-for-loss and led the team with six quarterback sacks during his true freshman year and was named a First-Team Freshman All-American by College Football News
  • At Oklahoma State, Bailey's defensive line helped the Cowboys finish second in the nation in turnover margin (1.42 per game)
  • While at MTSU, he helped take the Blue Raider's defensive line from last in the league in sacks to near the top
  • While working with West Virginia's defensive secondary, the Mountaineers won the Big East Conference title in 1993 and led the Big East in interceptions in 1994

Bailey earned his bachelors degree in sociology from the University of Tennessee in 1992 where he was part of two Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship teams. He was a four-year letterman from 1988-91 and led the team in tackles-for-loss and in quarterback sacks during his junior season. As a senior he was part of a Tennessee team that led the SEC in total defense.

He completed his collegiate career with 96 total tackles and 7.5 quarterback sacks and participated in four bowl games including the 1988 Peach Bowl, 1990 Cotton Bowl, 1991 Sugar Bowl and 1992 Fiesta Bowl.
