Athletic Department

Dwight Datcher assumed the position of Director of Athletics almost three years ago. Under his leadership, the department began video streaming broadcasts of its games.  Most of the 2006 and 2007 football seasons and at least one game of each spring sport was aired via the internet.  The athletics website boasts a new look while allowing fans to view archived games and ask the AD questions. With the sprucing up of Burr Gymnasium last year and the replacement of the Greene Stadium playing field, Datcher, in cooperation with other University departments, has begun the renovation of Howard's athletics facilities.  He was appointed to the NCCA Division I Championship/Competitions Cabinet on July 1, 2007.

Datcher came to Howard from Georgetown University where he served as associate director of athletics with responsibilities for sports medicine, administrative over- sight for men's and women's basketball and academic support, the University's relationship with city's Department of Parks and Recreation and game-day preparation for men's and women's basketball.  He also held the AD's job at the University of the District of Columbia.  He began his career in athletics administration at Roger Williams University, his alma mater after having served as the school's men's basketball coach.  His other basketball coaching stints include working as an assistant for the Georgetown men's team, serving as head coach at DC's St. Anthony's High School and as an assistant men's basketball coach by the U.S. Olympic Association.

A native Washingtonian, Datcher played high school ball at St. Anthony's under the tutelage of John Thompson.  While at Roger Williams, he was a four-year starter and a member of the 1,000 point club.  He is the proud father of two daughters, Chantee and Monikka.
