In his first season with the Bison, Theron Smith will serve as the runnings back coach. Smith enters into his new position with already established relationships with newly named head coach Gary Harrell – the two coaches worked hand-in-hand as coaches at Bowie State.
While at Bowie State Smith served as a tight ends and receivers coach beginning in 2004 and worked under Harrell who was the offensive coordinator at that time.
In 2005, Smith helped lead Bowie State CIAA Championship game as well as the Pioneer Bowl and the team finished 8-5 during that season.
Under his reigns, BSU running back Nathaniel Queen was named the Pigskin Club Player of the Year in 2006 after leading the CIAA in rushing yards (1,212) and scoring eight touchdowns. Also during his tenure Isaac Redman was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent in 2009.
Last season Bowie State finished their 2010 season ranked second overall in the CIAA Northern Division. Smith also helped lead his team to a 6-1 conference record and a 6-4 mark overall.
Smith received his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T in 1993.
