Game Notes: Howard at Delaware State

Complete Game Notes

The Game
This is a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up between the Bison of Howard University and the Hornets of Delaware State University. The Bison (2-8 overall, 0-7 in the MEAC) are coming off a 21-10 home loss to Bethune-Cookman last Saturday while the Hornets (3-7 overall, 2-5 in the MEAC) are coming off a 21-16 loss to Norfolk State University at home this past Saturday.  Howard has lost six straight while the Hornets are 2-2 in their last four games.

The Coaches
Howard University is coached by Carey Bailey (University of Tennessee, '92) who is 7-25 in three-plus seasons while Delaware State is coached by Al Lavan (Colorado State, ‘68), who is his sixth season and has a 32-17 record to date there.

New Additions
Veteran assistant coach Nick Calcutta takes over the duties of offensive line coach and offensive coordinator...Jafar Williams, a former standout wide receiver at the University of Maryland, takes over as wide receivers coach for Alvin Harper...Reggie Ellis enters his first season as defensive line coach and William Smith will serve as kicking coach.

 

Setting the Scene

Howard

Offense:  The offense will be led by red-shirt senior QB FLOYD HAIGLER (137 of 318, 1,363 yards, 7 TDs, 10 interceptions; 88 carries, 182 yards) sophomore WR WILLIE CARTER (43 catches, 561 yards, 5 TDs) senior WR BRANDON SHERMAN (19 receptions 243 yards, 1 TD), sophomore WR BRANDON DRAYTON (19 catches, 117 yards) and freshman RB ANDRA WILLIAMS (126 rushes, 419 yards, 1 TD; 11 receptions, 43 yards).

Defense:  The defense is led by sophomore LB IAN SIMON (29 solos, 34 assists, 3.5 tackles for losses, a fumble recovery), red-shirt freshman OLB KEITH POUGH (35 solos, 22 assists, 12.5 tackles for losses, an interception) red-shirt senior LB ROBERT PARKER, III (22 solos, 24 assists, 2.0 tackles for losses), senior DE WILL CRONER (28 solos, 27 assists, 10.0 tackles for losses, 3.0 sacks, an interception, a forced fumble), senior S ARANDO JAMISON (31 solos, 25 assists, 3.5 tackles for losses, a sack, an interception, 7 pass deflections) and senior S MARTIN CORNIFFE (27 solos, 18, 3.0 tackles for losses).

Bison Hooves: Howard has lost 18 straight conference games dating back to 2007...the Bison ranked second in the conference in 4th down conversions and in Red Zone defense...WILLIAMS ranks 9th in the conference in rushing...HAIGLER ranks 4th in passing yards and 5th in total offense...CARTER is third in the conference in receptions per game, fifth in receiving yards and 10th in all-purpose yards...PATRICK WOLFF leads the conference in most punts per games...POUGH ranks 4th in the MEAC in tackles for losses and is the highest rated freshman in that category...JAMISON is tied for 6th in passes defended.

Delaware State

Offense: The offense will be led by red-shirt junior QB ANTHONY GLAUD (104 of 189, 979 yards, 5 TDs), red-shirt sophomore RBs JAASHAWN JONES (120 carries, 502 yards, 3 TDs) and TAHREE MCQUEEN (36 carries, 166 yards), sophomore WRs DARIUS JACKSON (30 catches, 353 yards), junior WR LARRONE MOORE (28 catches, 214 yards) and senior WR ZACHARRI CHARLES (25 receptions, 242 yards, 3 TDs).

Defense: The defense is led by red-shirt junior DL ANDRE CARROLL (22 solos, 32 assists, 6.0 tackles for losses), senior LB AHMAD HARRIS (25 solos, 26 assists, 1.5 tackles for losses), red-shirt senior DB JEROME STRUMS (14 solos, 24 assists, 4 interceptions, a fumble recovery), red-shirt senior LB MIKE GABLE (26 solos, 20 assists, 4.0 tackles for losses, 2.0 sacks), red-shirt senior DL FABIAN DUNN (17 solos, 25 assists, 2.5 tackles for losses) and senior DB AVERY GRANT (25 solos, 19 assists, 3.0 tackles for losses, 2 interceptions).
