Game Notes: Howard at Georgetown
The Game
This is a non-conference match-up between the Bison of
Howard University and the Hoyas of Georgetown University. The
Bison (0-2 overall), from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,
dropped a 48-10 conference road decision to Florida A&M
University last Thursday night after opening the season with a
48-10 road loss at Rutgers. The Hoyas (0-3), from the Patriot
League, are also looking for their first win after dropping games
to Holy Cross (7-20), to Lafayette (3-28) and to Yale (10-31) last
week at home.
Media Notes
The game will be broadcast by Verizon FiOS and can be seen
on a tape-delayed basis on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 11:30 p.m. and
again on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 12:30 p.m.
The Coaches
Howard University is coached by Carey
Bailey (University of Tennessee, '92), who is in his third
season at the helm and has a 6-19 record to date. The Hoyas are
coach by Kevin Kelly (Springfield College, '82),
who is in his third season and has a 5-30 record to date.
Staff Changes
Veteran assistant coach Nick Calcutta takes over the
duties of offensive line coach and offensive coordinator...Jafar
Williams, a former standout wide receiver at the University of
Maryland, takes over as wide receivers coach for Alvin
Harper...Lawrence Ellis enters his first season as defensive line
coach and William Smith will serve as kicking coach.
Representing
Howard is currently second among all HBCUs in players in the National Football League with five: Tracy White (Philadelphia Eagles), Marques Douglas (New York Jets), Antoine Bethea (Indianapolis Colts), Ronald Bartell, Jr. (St. Louis Rams) and Geoff Pope (Cincinnati Bengals). The Bison also boast three former players who are on coaching staffs: Jimmie Johnson (Minnesota Vikings/TEs coach), Pep Hamilton (Chicago Bears/QBs coach) and Roy Anderson (Baltimore Ravens/defensive coach).
Youth Movement
Andra Williams is showing progress that he is going to be
a force for the Bison this season...the highly touted freshman
tailback from Deland, FL, is second on the team in rushing with 54
yards and is averaging almost 5 yards per carry...he has also
returned 7 kickoffs for 100 yards...Keith Pough leads the team in
tackles, averaging almost 11 per game...the red-shirt freshman from
Orangeburg, SC, also leads the team in tackles for losses with
4...Jared Dorsey got his first action as a collegian against FAMU
and responded with a team-high 38 yards rushing on six carries
while completing two of four passes.
Mr. Consistency
Arando Jamison had his best season in a Bison uniform last
year...the senior safety from Tampa, FL, has picked up where he
left off...he is second on the team in tackles with 15 and he has a
forced fumble, a sack and two pass breakups.
Next Up
The Bison battle Winston-Salem State next Saturday at 1 pm
in the home opener for HU. The Hoyas face off with Bucknell
next Saturday at 1 pm.
Setting the Scene
Howard
OFFENSE: The offense will be led by red-shirt senior QB FLOYD HAIGLER (22 of 51, 238 yards, 1 TD; 23 carries, 73 yards), sophomore WR WILLIE CARTER (10 receptions, 139 yards, 1 TD) and freshman TB ANDRA WILLIAMS (11 carries, 54 yards). Senior center SEAN WOOLFORD and senior guard MICHAEL RUSSELL anchor the offensive line.
DEFENSE: The defense is led by red-shirt freshman OLB KEITH POUGH (12 solos, nine assists, four tackles for losses), LB PATRICK JEAN MARY (two solos, nine assists), sophomore LB IAN SIMON (one solo, 11 assists tackles), senior DB DANTE MARTIN (three solos, three assists), red-shirt junior LB ROBERT PARKER (five tackles, seven assists), red-shirt junior DB LANNY KELLY (three tackles, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup) and senior safeties ARANDO JAMISON (eight tackles, seven assists, a sack, a forced fumble) and MARTIN CORNIFFE (five tackles).
BISON HOOVES: After throwing 19 interceptions last season, Haigler has yet to throw one this season...he leads the team in rushing and total offense...Keith Pough appears to be as advertised...the red-shirt freshman was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after recording 11 tackles in the loss to FAMU...Willie Carter appears to be fully recovered from the fractured leg that he suffered last season in the sixth game...Carter leads the team in receptions with 10 and a TD.
Georgetown
OFFENSE: The Hoyas are led by freshman QB ISAIAH KEMPF (38 of 71, 413 yards, two interceptions), junior RB CHARLIE HOUGHTON (20 carries, 68 yards), senior WR ROBERT LANE (21 receptions, 198 yard), junior WR KEEROM LAWRENCE (14 receptions, 140 yards, 1 TD), and sophomore WR DISHON HUGHES (eight receptions, 140 yards).
DEFENSE: On defense, Georgetown is led by sophomore S DAVID QUINTERO (12 solos, 17 assists, 1.0 tackles for losses), sophomore LB WAYNE HEIMULI (13 solos, six assists, 4.5 tackles for losses, a sack), senior DE CHUDI OBIANWU (10 solos, 7 assists, 4.5 tackles for losses, 2.0 sacks)), junior DB GYASI PARRISH (10 solos, seven assists, 1.0 tackles for losses) and junior LB PAUL SANT'AMBROGIO (seven solos, 10 assists).
HOYA NOTES: Georgetown has yet to score a rushing TD this season and are averaging less than two yards per carry...11 different receivers have caught at least one pass for the Hoyas...Houghton leads the team in all-purpose yards with 103 per game...Robert Lane is averaging 7 receptions per game...Nick Parrish was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and Isaiah Kempf was named the League Rookie of the Week.
