Greg McGhee was named the 2011 MEAC Rookie of the Year, Keith Pough, Sackie Kerkulah, Willie Carter and Cory Gwinner were named first team all-conference and Lanny Kelly, Corey Berry and McGhee were voted second team. The selections are voted on by the conference coaches and sports information directors.

A 6-3, 200-pound freshman from Pittsburgh, PA, McGhee becomes just the third player in school history to receive the honor, joining former Bison Vontae Long and Willie Carter. McGhee had an outstanding season, starting 11 games and finishing as the team’s second leading rusher with 388 yards and four touchdowns. McGhee had an efficiency rating of 110.5 and passed for 1,784 yards and 13 touchdowns to finish 4^th in the MEAC in passing.

He was named Rookie of the Week five times during the season and he is a candidate for the Inaugural Jerry Rice Award, given to the top freshman in the Football Championship Division.

 A 6-3, 235-pound red-shirt junior from Orangeburg, SC, Pough had a phenomenal season. The Buck Buchanan Award watch list candidate recorded 71 solo tackles and tackled runners behind the line of scrimmage 21 times for minus 77 yards while also sacking quarterbacks three times for 19 yards in losses.  Pough also had 2 forced fumbles, 11 QB hurries, and a fumble recovery.

In addition to leading the MEAC in tackles, Pough was 5^th nationally in the tackles for losses category and tied for and 9^th in forced fumbles. He now has 62 tackles for losses and 277 total tackles in 32 games during his three-year career.

Kerkulah, a 6-4, 255-pound red-shirt senior from Wilingboro, NJ, also had his best season.  The defensive end collected 30 solos and 20 assists. He led the MEAC and ranked 5^th nationally with 19.0 tackles for losses of minus 99 yards. Kerkulah was also ranked 12^th nationally in sacks with a total of 9.5 for 75 yards in losses.

Kerkulah also recorded a forced fumble, fumble recovery, two pass break ups, two pass deflections and a career-high 13 QB hurries. 

Carter played in 11 games this season and grabbed 60 passes for 731 yards and 7 TDs despite a   lot of double coverage.  He had a season long of 69 yards and averaged 12.2 yards per catch.

The 6-3, 190-pound senior from Denmark, SC, was 3^rd in the MEAC in receiving yards per game and in total receiving yards categories, and 4^th in receptions per game. Carter, who came close to breaking or tying total receptions and touchdowns for his career here at Howard, had 179 receptions for 2,401 yards and 23 TDs in 38 games during his career. He needed 184 career receptions to break Head Coach Gary “Flea” Harrell’s school record and 26 touchdowns to break Jarahn “J-Boy” Williams’ record.

Cory Gwinner, a 6-6, 310-pound red-shirt junior from Ypsilanti, MI, returned after missing the 2010 season and had a phenomenal year after missing all of the 2010 season due to injury.

 The offensive tackle started all 11 games and was voted first team offense in the MEAC. His blocking was a key component in the success of running back Terrance Leffall, who rushed for over 800 yards and the development of McGhee.

Lanny Kelly, a 5-11, 190-pound senior from Richmond, CA, had his best season. Kelly was a key to the Bison’s nationally ranked pass defense.

He was ranked 2^nd in the conference for pass defended, recording 18. He was also tied for 2^nd in the conference and ranked 23^rd nationally for interceptions, grabbing a career-best 4 for 66 yards.

 Kelly added 20 solo and 7 assist tackles, and 14 break ups to his resume.

Corey Berry, a 6-3, 260-pound senior from Orangeburg, SC, had his best season, recording career highs in sacks with 6.5 for a loss of 41 yards, 22 solos, 20 assisted tackles and an interception for six yards.

 In addition to being 4^th in the MEAC in sacks and ranked 54^th nationally, Berry was 5^th in the conference and 30^th nationally in tackles for losses. He finished with 15.5 for losses of 61 yards.

 Berry also recorded 8 quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and recovered a fumble.
