Article Courtesy of WINNERS Lacrosse "Would you rather have lacrosse practice in 30 degree weather or celebrate being a female athlete with one of your opponents?" This question proved to be a no brainer for the Washington, DC based women's lacrosse teams from Catholic University of America and Howard University. On Saturday February 10th players from both teams came together to host a mother daughter lacrosse clinic for participants of WINNERS Lacrosse, a non-profit organization dedicated to using lacrosse as a vehicle to reach youth in DC's inner city. Catholic University's head coach Meghan McDonough reached out to WINNERS Lacrosse to organize the clinic as a way to celebrate National Girls And Women In Sports Day - an event founded by the Women's Sports Foundation. Players from WINNERS Lacrosse' middle school girls program and their mothers spent the day learning basic lacrosse drills, playing "Would You Rather," and watching "Bend It Like Beckham." The theme for the day, "Throw Like a Girl, Lead Like A Champion," sparked a thought provoking dialogue about leading like a champion on and off the field amongst the young women in the room. "I think it is important for my players and future players to understand and appreciate the struggles women have had and continue to have playing sports especially since Title IX played a major role in Howard University having the first African American Women's Lacrosse program in NCAA history!" said Howard women's coach, Marguerite Lenaux. Catholic University and Howard University have pledged their commitment to DC's youth by continuing to mentor them. In April, both teams will host a player shadow day - allowing a middle school girl from the WINNERS Lacrosse program to shadow a student/athlete for a day and then attend lacrosse practice. The teams are also planning a bigger celebration for next year's National Girls and Women in Sports Day which will include a scrimmage followed by a live field demonstration and clinic. |
