HAMPTON, VA. - Rashad West scored 11 of his team-high 17 points to lead Hampton University to a 71-58 win over Howard University in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season finale at the Convocation Center.

West, a senior guard, scored nine of the Pirates points during a 22-7 run over the first eight minutes that extended a four-point halftime lead to 57-39.  When the first team All-MEAC selection was not scoring, he was setting up his teammates as he dealt out nine assists.

Howard (6-25 overall, 3-13 in the MEAC) refused to quit and got the margin to a workable margin at 66-56, but each time, turnovers (23) or missed opportunities prevented them from cutting the margin to under 10.

The Bison, who were embarrassed, 65-31 in the first meeting between the two rivals on December 1 at Madison Square Garden, got big games from junior guard Randy Hampton and sophomore center Paul Kirkpatrick.  Hampton scored 18 of his career-high 22 points in the first half to keep his team within striking distance.

Kirkpatrick also recorded a career-high 19 points, many coming on slam dunks and 8 rebounds.

Hampton (18-11 overall, 11-5 in the MEAC) used its bench liberally and got production from 10 different players to outscore the Bison, 34-11.  Donte Harrison led the reserves with 12 points on 6 of shooting.

The two teams await their pairings for the upcoming MEAC Tournament, March 10-15 in Raleigh, NC.
