Hot Shooting Virginia Downs Howard

Charlottesville, VA—January 4—The University of Virginia used a blistering three-point shooting barrage, that included a blistering 64 percent from beyond the arc to shoot down Howard, 84-63 in a non-conference men's game at John Paul Jones Arena.

Most of the damage was inflicted by Mustapha Farrakhan, who poured in a career-high 31 points on 8 of 9 shooting from long range.  Joe Harris also got into the frenzy, coming off the bench to tally 16 points on 5 of 6 from the three-point line.

The Bison (2-11) had their best shooting performance of the season, connecting on 53 percent from the field overall, and a better than respectable 47 percent from the beyond the arc.

Mike Phillips led four Howard players with double figures with 21 points while Dadrian Collins contributed 15 of 5 of 8 from the outside and Anton Dickerson and Kyle Riley each tallied 11.

The Bison came out strong and played spirited basketball, leading by as many as six until the Cavaliers (10-5) closed the half with a 19-6 run to take a 45-32 lead to the locker room.  Mustapha led the way for UVA with 18 on 6 of 6 from the field.

Collins (12) and Phillips (10) combined for 22 of the Bison's points, but again the Howard bench failed to produce as the Cavaliers held a 17-2 advantage.

Mustapha and Harris continued their assault in the second half and the Bison were not able to keep up.  To their credit, the Bison were once able to cut a 16-point deficit to nine, but UVA went on another one of their three-point barrages to put the game away.

NEXT UP:  The Bison travel to Baltimore, MD to take on the Bears of Morgan State on Saturday at 4 pm while the Cavaliers will host the Tarheels of Chapel Hill on Saturday at 12 noon.

GAME NOTES: UVA got 28 points off 18 Howard turnovers and a 30-2 bench advantage…Howard won the second chance battle, 12-7…the Bison starters each played over 32 minutes.
