Howard Drops Season Opener to Bowling Green
Bowling Green, OH—November 11—Scott Thomas scored eight of his a game-high 14 points in the first half, and Craig Sealey and Jordon Crawford combined for 20 in the second half to help Bowling Green pull away to a 63-48 win over Howard in the season opener for both teams at the new Stroh Center.
The Falcons (1-0) jumped out to 13- 0 lead in the first four minutes as Thomas led the way with
eight of his team's points. The Bison (0-1) finally broke the ice when Mike Phillips converted two free throws to get his team on the board at the 13:39 mark.
It appeared to relax the young Bison as they went on a 15-5 run that cut the deficit to 18-15 at
the 2:47 mark. But Howard allowed the Falcons to close out the half with an 8-2 spurt and take a 26-17 lead to the locker room.
The Bison came out after the intermission and reeled off a 6-0 run on baskets by freshmen
Theodore Boyomo, Simuel Frazier and Prince Okoroh, again reducing the deficit to three at 26-23 at the 16:54 mark.
But the more experienced Falcons, who return their starting five, responded with Sealey, a
reserve, coming up with some big baskets as he tallied 11 of his 13 in the second half. Jordon Crawford made sure that Howard would not cut into the lead as he scored nine of his 13 points down the stretch.
Howard was plagued by foul trouble all game as it was called for 27 fouls. Frazier and Okoroh
both fouled out.
Phillips recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bison while Frazier
and Calvin Thompson each contributed eight points.
Howard held a significant advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the hosts, 38-27, but 20
points off 19 turnovers proved to be too much to overcome.
The Bison had some special fans that came out to support them. Howard president Dr. Sidney Ribeau and his wife Dr. Paula Ribeau, who is formerly the president of Bowling Green, came out to cheer on the Bison.
