WASHINGTON, D.C. - After a split of Saturday’s doubleheader, Howard defeated Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North foe Coppin State in walk off fashion 4-3 in Sunday’s rubber game.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the seventh inning and the bases full of Bison (15-16, 5-1), Aisha Ledet hit a ball to short. The Eagles’ (16-13, 4-2) Candice Wright could not come up with the ball cleanly allowing Christine Sborz to score from third to end the game.
Coppin State jumped out to 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning, but Sborz followed Trina Kindred’s lead-off double with a home run to left field to tie the game. Sborz finished the game 2-3 with a walk, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Howard junior Emily Johnson had a difficult afternoon by going just one plus innings and giving up all three Eagle runs on two hits and two walks. Senior Christina McCoy came on in relief of Johnson and pitched six scoreless frames and allowing just two hits.
The Bison welcome another MEAC rival to town next Saturday as Hampton comes to D.C. for a three game series. Game one of a Saturday doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
