WASHINGTON, D.C. - Courtney Young led Howard to a 15-2 blowout of Hampton in game one of Saturday’s Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) North doubleheader with four runs batted in.

Young was one of four Bison seniors honored in Howard's final home series. Nicole Saez, Aisha Ledet and Christina McCoy were were also honored in pregame festivities.  

With the Bison (16-16, 6-12) up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Young needed only one swing of the bat to blow the game open when she came to the plate with the bases loaded.  The senior right fielder hit a grand slam to center field and the route was on.  After a five run second inning, Howard would go on to score four runs in the third and six in the fourth.

The Pirates (18-29, 6-1) were undefeated in MEAC North games before coming to D.C.  Hampton’s Travonna Byrd (6-13) was roughed up for fifteen runs over the mercy rule shortened four inning affair by the Bison’s offense.

Emily Johnson improved to 5-2 on the season for Howard and pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up just one earned run while scattering six Pirate hits.

Five different Bison scored two times or more including Lorae Robinson who went 3-4 with two stolen bases and three runs scored. 

GAME 2

Christine Sborz went 2-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Howard to a doubleheader sweep over MEAC North foe Hampton 11-3.

With the game tied at three in the bottom of the fourth, Sborz hit a two RBI double to right center field to put the Bison (17-16, 7-1) out in front for good.

McCoy ran into problems in the third inning, giving up three Pirate (18-30, 6-2) runs in the frame and giving Howard its first deficit of the afternoon.  Jessica Hurston came on in relief and pitched three innings and allowing no runs to pick up her first win of the season.

Ledet capped the scoring with a two RBI double to left.  She went 1-4 with a game high four RBI’s .

Howard will host Hampton tomorrow in its final home game at Banneker Field in D.C., the game is scheduled for a one o’clock first pitch.
