Hungerford Shines As Bison Fall to Tribe
October 14, 2011 - The Howard University Bison swimmers began their weekend on the Tidewater Friday evening against the College of William and Mary. With talented depth in all disciplines, the Tribe notched two team victories over the Bison, 186-69 on the women's side and 176-79 for the men's squad.
While the Tribe took control of the racing early and often, Howard fought hard in all of their races and posted some noteworthy swims. This charge was led by sophomore Darell Hungerford. Hungerford (Clinton, MD) provided the lone victory for the Bison in the 100 breaststroke. His winning time of 1:01.79 was just .01 seconds in front of William and Mary's Evan Mulloy. Hungerford terrific meet continued in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore's final four lengths were outstanding as he caught Nick Mason of William and Mary. His time of 2:19.40 out-touched Mason by 0.14 seconds.
"Darell was terrific this evening," said head coach Matt Salerno. "His growth from last year to this year is commendable. He's well ahead of his pace from 2010-2011 and we know there is more success in store for him. That kind of effort will resonate with our team...keep them fighting even against a strong opponent."
Other exceptional efforts included ones from freshman Miles Hector and junior Zadok Isaacs. Hector (Omaha, NE) battled valiantly in his 1000 freestyle. His time of 10:04.00 bettered his mark from last week and, again, earned him on top of the record books for the event in HU history. Isaacs (Cantaro Village, Trinidad and Tobago) used his early aggressive approach and strong turns at the finish to earn second place in the 200 backstroke. His time of 2:02.12 was the fastest on the team for the season.
The men's 400 freestyle relay concluded the meet with a third place finish. Swimming the event for the first time this season, the team of Isaacs, and freshmen Trent Popovich (Morro Bay, CA,) Dexter Brown (Pearland, TX,) and Ben Skelding (Palmdale, CA) posted a time of 3:23.18.
The Lady Bison also nabbed third place in the 400 freestyle relay. Sophomores Janai Ederaine (Corona, CA) and Ashley Douglas (Missouri City, TX) team with freshmen Briana Dillon (Katy, TX) and Caleah Gregoire (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) to post a time of 3:57.02.
Dillon earned a third place finish in the 200 backstroke. Her inaugural swim in the event was solid, and scored her a time of 2:26.81.
The Bison are back in action, bright and early in Norfolk, VA. Their meet against Old Dominion University will begin Saturday morning at 10AM.
