Delaware State Edges Howard in Five Sets

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Delaware State in five sets, 3-2 (18-25, 25-13, 25-14, 16-25, 16-14), Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lady Bison fall to 12-15 (6-2 MEAC) as the Hornets improve to 11-10 (5-3 MEAC).

Despite the loss, two Bison recorded double-digit kills in the match: sophomore Gazelle d'Artois and freshman Gabrielle Martin. d'Artois registered 12 kills, seven digs and four kills while Martin had a team-high 14 kills. Freshman setter Grace DeMichelis recorded a double-double of 36 assists and 12 digs.

Freshman Taylor Johnson chipped in seven kills with a .357 attack percentage. Senior Elyssa Lee added six kills, two digs and two block assists. Sophomore libero Nicole Brown dug out 16 balls.

Howard took the first set before Delaware State rebounded and hit .200 and .346 in the second and third sets, respectively.

The Bison hit a whopping .444 in the fourth set before relinquishing the fifth set, 16-14.

For DSU, Sarah Wheatcroft (11 digs and 20 set-assists) and Martina Ferrari (13 digs and 15 set-assists) each recorded double-doubles, while junior Cassandra Joyner had a match-high 17 kills. Wheatcroft also had a match-high five block assists.

Howard returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28 with a home non-conference matchup against George Washington at 7pm,
