Boxscore

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rubena Sukaj, Rebecca Heath and Claire Recht had eight kills apiece to lead American past Howard, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15) in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at Burr Gymnasium.

American hit .370 for the match while limiting HU to a .032 percentage.

Sophomore Gazelle d'Artois and freshman Gabrielle Martin paced the Bison with six kills each, while Nicole Brown added a team-high seven digs on the defensive end for Howard.

Ivana Cebakova chipped in 10 digs and five service aces for the Eagles, who improve to 6-6 with the win.

The Bison (4-13) were competitive in all three sets, but American used big runs to pull away.

HU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set on kills by Martin before AU took advantage of a few Bison miscues to tie it up at 9-9. Consecutive kills by Sukaj helped the Eagles open up a six-point lead near the end of the contest.

American stormed to a 10-4 lead in the second set and controlled a lot of the action in the 25-17 win.

The third set was very tight in the beginning with the teams trading points before the Eagles reeled off six straight points midway through to take a 15-9 lead.

Howard will host its first annual alumni match on Saturday before opening up conference play against Coppin State on Friday, Oct. 3. Game time against the Eagles is slated for 7 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
