Howard Picks Up First Conference Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard volleyball defeated Coppin State 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 in the conference opener for both teams Friday night in Burr Gymnasium.

Freshman Gabrielle Martin led the Bison (5-13, 1-0 MEAC) with a match-high 12 kills, while Grace DeMichelis added 32 assists. Sophomore Gazelle d'Artois added 11 kills and six digs while senior Janel James led the squad in digs with seven. 

Brittany Arvin led Coppin State (0-13, 0-1 MEAC) with five kills while Jade Dudley added eight digs.

HU found itself in an early hole against the Eagles as Coppin State took a quick 4-1 lead in the first set.  

The Bison countered with a 7-2 run, which gave Howard an 8-5 advantage. Kills by d'Artois and freshman Jiyana Brown keyed the spurt. The Bison hit a season-high .381 in the first set.

Howard controlled the second set from the start and raced out to an 11-4 lead. HU later extended its lead to 14 and CSU would get no closer than 10 after that.

The Eagles battled HU in the third set. A kill by Elyssa Lee at 9-6 spurred a 7-1 Bison run before Coppin State took advantage of several Bison miscues to climb within four points of the lead.

A kill by d'Artois closed out the set, and the match, at 25-21.

Howard faces off with Morgan State on Sunday at 3 pm.
