The Game
Howard enters Monday's contest with an 8-9 (4-2 MEAC) mark. The
Lady Bison took down Florida A&M in OT, 69-68 on Jan. 23 while
Bethune-Cookman (7-10, 3-3 MEAC) were downed by Hampton 81-44 in
its last time out on Saturday.
Freshman Saadia Doyle had a team-high 23 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the win over the Rattlers while Kara Smith and Cheyenne Curley-Payne added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Sarah Bolden and Porche Anderson paced BCU with 10 points apiece in the loss to the Pirates. Demetria Frank (5) and Parress Davis (5) led the team in rebounding.
Scouting Bethune-Cookman
Bethune-Cookman is 7-10 (3-3 MEAC) with conference wins over
Norfolk State, Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore. Demetria
Frank is averaging 12.7 points per game while Jalisa Isaacs (10.9
ppg), Euneisha Proctor (9.2 ppg) and Sarah Bolden (9.2 ppg) round
out the scoring for the Lady Wildcats. Bolden is tops on the team
with 8.1 rebounds per game and Proctor pulls down 7.1 boards per
game.
Bethune-Cookman is coached by Vanessa Inge, who is in her 2nd season at BCU. She has a 132-152 record in 10 years as a head coach.
Freshman Sensation
Freshman Saadia Doyle (5-11, F) has posted
double-doubles in 11 of 17 games this season, a feat that puts her
6th in the NCAA rankings at press time. The Atlanta, Ga. native is
averaging 16.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per outing and was named
the MEAC Rookie of the Week four times this season. A warrior on
the boards, her rebounds per game total ranks 7th
highest in the NCAA. Her 22 rebounds vs. Coppin State is the fifth
highest total in the NCAA this season.
Twin Towers
Freshmen Nicole Deterville (6-1, F/C) and
Portia Deterville (6-1, F/C) are the first set of
twins to play under the Coach G era. Nicole and Portia join
teammate Amanda Edwards (6-0, F) from Toronto,
Canada and are mainstays in the Bison frontcourt.
Get ‘Em Next Year
Newcomers Jerelle Gorham (Durham, N.C./Hillside
H.S.) and Cabria Johnson (Upper Marlboro,
Md./Elizabeth Seton H.S.) will sit out the 2009-10 season.
Gorham is a 5-8 guard and Johnson is a 5-11 forward.
Weekly Honors
Zykia Brown was named the MEAC Player of the Week on Dec.
14 after posting 23 points and nine rebounds against George Mason.
Saadia Doyle was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week
four times this season (Dec. 17, Dec. 21, Dec. 30 and Jan. 25).
Brown Nets 1,000 Points
Zykia Brown joined the 1,000 club in the Bison's
win over Norfolk State on Jan. 18. She was the 15th
player in women's basketball history to accomplish that feat.
Bison Ink Eight for 2009-10
Howard is one of the youngest squads in the nation with
eight freshmen. Cheyenne Curley-Payne, Kara Smith, Cabria
Johnson, Jerelle Gorham, Tamoria Holmes, Julee' O'Neal, Portia
Deterville and Nicole Deterville were all
welcomed to the Mecca this year.
Up Next
The Lady Bison travel to Maryland Eastern Shore on
Saturday, Jan. 30 in a Coaches vs. Cancer game. Game time against
the Lady Hawks is slated for 2 p.m. at Hytche Athletic Center.
