Win Streak Snapped With 58-54 Loss at N.C. A&T
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Howard Univ. women's basketball team had its five game win-streak snapped with a 58-54 loss at N.C. A&T. Saadia Doyle lead the team with 18 points and nine boards. Cheyenne Curley-Payne tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, and four steals in 38 minutes of action. Tamoria Holmes chipped in with 10 points, six steals, and pulled down six off the glass.
The loss drops the Lady Bison to 6-5 in the conference and 10-15 overall. North Carolina A&T improves to 11-11 and 7-4 in the MEAC. Prior to the matchup, Howard was in a three-way tie for third place with N. C. A&T and Norfolk State.
In the second stint, a three-pointer by Adelle Walton with 11 seconds left in regulation brought the Lady Bison to within two, 56-54. An HU foul on the inbound pass put the Aggies' Jeleesa Sams at the line. Sams knocked the first free-throw down, and Doyle grabbed the rebound on the second shot. Howard had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but a turnover in the last few seconds destroyed all hopes of an extra period.
For N.C. A&T, Jaquayla Berry led all-scorers with 27 points. Sams finished with 10 points and a game-best 14 boards.
As a team, the Lady Bison were outrebounded 50-34 and gave up 26 points in the paint. HU scored 23 points off 22 Aggie turnovers.
Howard is back in action on Monday when it faces Norfolk State beginning at 6 p.m.
