WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – February 24 – The Howard University women's basketball team looks to bounce back on Monday, Feb. 25 against Maryland Eastern Shore in Salisbury, Md., at 5:30 p.m.

Howard is currently 16-10 overall, 10-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, 8-3 at home and 8-7 on the road.

HU heads to UMES after a 71-64 loss to Coppin State on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Burr Gymnasium.

Three student-athletes in blue and white finished in double figures.   Saadia Doyle led the team with 24 points, while Kara Smith tallied 13 points and Jerelle Gorham notched 11 points.  Cheyenne Curley-Payne guided HU in assists with eight, as she and Nicole Deterville pulled down a team-high six rebounds apiece.

As a team, Howard shot 81 percent from the charity stripe (13-16), 41 percent from the field (25-61) and 11 percent from three-point range (1-9).

To overpower the Lady Bison, Coppin State outscored HU in the paint 42-36, while the bench outscored Howard 20-6.

Maryland Eastern welcomes Howard after suffering a 78-47 loss to Hampton on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Princess Anne, Md. 

Lady Bison Bites

• Niki Reid Geckeler is in her fourth season as head coach

• Finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (2011-12)

• Saadia Doyle is 15th in the country in scoring with 20.8 points per game and 84th in rebounding with 8.9 pg.

• Cheyenne Curley-Payne is 19th in the country in assists with 6.2 per game and 61th in steals with 2.64 pg.

• Among the 343 schools in the country, HU has the fifth strongest defensive regime

• Saadia Doyle is now the all-time leading scorer in the MEAC and Howard with 2,221

• This is the second meeting between HU and UMES

Scouting Maryland Eastern Shore

• Fred Batchelor is the head women's basketball coach at Maryland Eastern

• The Lady Hawks are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

• UMES is currently 7-16 overall, 3-9 in the MEAC, 6-6 at home, and 0-3 on the road

• In head-to-head action, Maryland Eastern fell to Hampton 78-47

• Karona Roach led the team with 14 points, while Ashleigh Claybrooks finished with 11 points and Shawnee Sweeney tallied 10 points

• The Lady Hawks are 32 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three-point range and 64 percent from the free-throw line

Consecutive Honors for Doyle

Saadia Doyle was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  The honor was announced on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Along with Doyle's accolades, the Lady Bison were predicted to finish first in the MEAC this 2012-13 season.

Major News

Among 340 mid-major Division I institutions in the country, the Lady Bison ranked 12th above Richmond (Atlantic 10), Harvard (Ivy) and Central Michigan (Mid-American) on the preseason list.
