2012-13 Information Guide

WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – March 1 – With 27 games completed, the Howard University women's basketball team concluded the 2012-13 regular season on Saturday, March 2 at 4:00 p.m. with a Delaware State University in Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.

HU is 17-10 on the season, 11-4 in the conference, 8-3 at home, and 8-7 on the road.

The Lady Bison look to conclude the season with two consecutive wins.  HU defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 40-35 in Princess Anne, Md.  In the nail-biting win, senior Adelle Walton tallied a season-best 12 points on a 4-of-5 outing from behind the arc, while fellow classmate Cheyenne Curley-Payne led the Lady Bison with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

As a unit, Howard shot 44 percent from three-point range (7-16), 36 percent from the free-throw line (5-14) and 29 percent from the field (14-49). 

Prior to tip-off Howard will honor the 2012-13 senior student-athletes and managers.  The Lady Bison will honor Cheyenne Curley-Payne (San Diego, Calif.), Adelle Walton (San Diego, Calif.), Saadia Doyle (Atlanta, Ga.), Julee O'Neal (Durham, N.C.), Nicole Deterville (Toronto, Ontario), Portia Deterville (Toronto, Onatrio), and Kara Smith (Chicago, Ill.)

On the season, Howard averages 55 points per game, 35 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range and 65 percent from the free-throw line.

Lady Bison Bites

• Niki Reid Geckeler is in her fourth season as head coach

• Finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (2011-12)

• Saadia Doyle is 14th in the country in scoring with 21.0 points per game and 93rd in rebounding with 8.7 pg.

• Cheyenne Curley-Payne is 18th in the country in assists with 6.2 per game and 57th in steals with 2.65 pg.

• Among the 343 schools in the country, HU has the sixth strongest defensive regime

• Saadia Doyle is now the all-time leading scorer in the MEAC and Howard

• This is the second meeting between HU and DSU

• Howard has defeated MEAC foes: Delaware State (54-40), Coppin State (67-54), Norfolk State (56-45), N.C. A&T (44-42), NCCU (56-30), Savannah State (53-41), UMES (59-30), Morgan State (68-33), FAMU (58-57), Bethune-Cookman (61-27), and UMES (40-35)

• HU defeated UMES 40-35 on Monday, Feb. 25 in Princess Anne, Md.

Scouting Delaware State

• Tamika Louis is the head women's basketball coach at Delaware State

• The Lady Hornets are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

• DSU is currently 9-17 overall, 6-7 in the MEAC, 5-6 at home, and 4-9 on the road

• In head-to-head action with Hampton, HU defeated DSU 49-41

• Tierra Hawkins led the team with 12, while Tasia Bristow and Kianna D'Oliveira finished with 11 points apiece

Consecutive Honors for Doyle

Saadia Doyle was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  The honor was announced on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Along with Doyle's accolades, the Lady Bison were predicted to finish first in the MEAC this 2012-13 season.

Major News

Among 340 mid-major Division I institutions in the country, the Lady Bison ranked 12th above Richmond (Atlantic 10), Harvard (Ivy) and Central Michigan (Mid-American) on the preseason list.
