Lacrosse Drops Home Opener to Bucknell

WASHINGTON, DC - The Howard women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Bucknell, 24-5, on a windy Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

In the battle of the Bison, Howard (0-2) gave up four early scores in the first half before junior Desiree Cox led HU's attack with its first goal, setting the tone for a competitive first half. Cox – the nation's No. 2 goal-scorer in the 2010 season – would be limited to only one goal against Bucknell (1-1) after saving HU from a shutout against cross-town opponent George Washington with three goals in their season opener.

Fouls would plague HU and lead to countless opportunities for Bucknell to score. Freshman attacker/midfielder Imani McLeary was disqualified for the remainder of competition after recording two yellow cards in the opening period. Howard also failed to win the draw control battle as Bucknell beat the Bison, 20-11.

Despite the strong presence of fouls and inability to win draw control, Howard would attempt to belittle Bucknell's lead following Cox's opening score as the Bison tacked on three additional goals. By the close of the half Howard trailed Bucknell, 10-4.

Following half time, Howard failed to upkeep the scoring exchange that they generated in the first half, as Bucknell cruised through the remainder of the game on a 14-0 run. HU would score its final goal within the last minute of the game to end the second half scoring drought.

Leading HU in shots were sophomore Chasity Dailey and freshman Cheryse Cox with two a piece. Bucknell, however, outshot Howard 45-9 and allowed a mere shot in the second half.

Amidst the loss, freshmen Courtney Lackey, Cynethia Smalls and Cheryse Cox each recorded their first goals of their collegiate career.

Up next the Bison will travel to Howard Community College on Monday, Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m. in search of their first win of the 2010-11 season.
