WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard women's soccer team played Youngstown State close on Sunday climbing back from a deficit, but the Lady Bison could not overcome the Penguin rally and lost 4-2 in the season opener at Greene Stadium.

"The hard work in practice allowed us to improve in a number of areas," head coach Brent Leiba said. "We came out with energy, but we have to learn how to finish off a game."

The Bison offense had a strong outing, pressuring often and finishing with 11 shots and five corner kicks. Five different players tallied a shot in the contest while Rachael Lee and newcomer Cynthia Snyder connected on their first goals of the season.

Retha Koefoed, Snyder and Jordan Brown each tallied three shots apiece.

Goalkeeper Chanel Bell got her first start of the season in net and had a solid outing, making 11 saves in 90 minutes of action.

YSU (1-1) scored all of its goals in the first half.  HU got on board just before the intermission in the 42nd minute, as Lee came charging in and headed the ball past Penguin goalie Nicole Kline to make it 3-1. Snyder scored for the Lady Bison in the 46th minute to close the deficit to 3-2.

Howard (0-1) looks to get on the winning track on Fri., Aug. 28 when it travels to Radford.
