W. Tennis Split Two in Queens
QUEENS, NY - The Howard women's tennis team (2-4) split matches with St. John's University (2-3) and Long Island University (0-1) in a trip to Queens, N.Y. this past weekend.
The Lady Bison snagged their second win of the spring by defeating the Blackbirds on Sun. Feb. 12, 6-1. Howard fell to the Red Storm in a close bout (3-4) just a day earlier, however.
Freshman standout Brooke Hawthorne extended her winning streak in singles competition to four straight after taking down Ksenia Mikhaylova of Saint John's (6-4, 6-0) and Long Island's Linn Sjogren in two sets (7-6, 7-6). Hawthorne leads the Lady Bison with five wins and an overall record of 5-1 on the season.
Alongside Hawthorne, is fellow freshman Katelyn Stokes who garnered her fourth and fifth win on the year after defeating the Red Storm's Ece Firat (6-0, 6-1) and LIU's Dara Lahens (6-3, 6-0). Stokes also teamed up with junior Michelle Brown against St. John's and were responsible for the only Bison win in doubles competition against the Red Storm, knocking down Firat and Nevena Selakovic (8-3) at the No. 1 doubles.
Against Long Island, Brown and Stokes teamed up at the No. 1 doubles to take down the Blackbirds' Aleksandra Pavlovic and Taysha Blessington in a close exchange (9-8).
Howard's duo comprised of Brittney Morgan and Hawthorne would easily seal doubles points for the Bison after they defeated Lahens and Fatima Outtara (8-2).
The Lady Bison relinquished only one singles match to Long Island as Blessington defeated Morgan at the No. 2 singles spot (6-4, 6-1).
