WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – Former Howard University student-athletes Anna Akhimien and Michelle Brown continue to make their mark as Lady Bison as they were named to the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete list on Thursday, July 5.  HU sophomore Talia Johnson also received the award based on her academic success during her freshman year.

Along with the individual awards, the HU women's tennis team, who combined for a program-high 3.51 GPA, also gained acknowledgement under the ITA All-Academic Teams list.  This year's team award marks the second consecutive honor for the women's tennis squad.

Brown notched a 4.00 grade point average, Akhimien obtained a 3.79 GPA and Johnson finished her first year with a 3.64 GPA.

To earn the ITA Scholar-Athlete award a player must meet three criteria: a) be a varsity letter winner, b) have a great point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and c) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.  The ITA All-Academic Team award is bestowed upon any ITA participating program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).

"I am extremely proud of their accomplishments in the classroom," said HU head tennis coach Larry Strickland.  "It was a goal we set and meet during the 2011-12 season."
