Hawks Take Out Bison on Senior Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Whitney Johnson had 12 kills to lead Maryland Eastern Shore over Howard in a MEAC volleyball contest Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium. The match marked the final contest for seniors Elyssa Lee and Janel James.

Howard (14-19, 7-3 MEAC) was led by sophomore Gazelle d'Artois who had six kills, six assists, four digs and three blocks.

Lee and sophomore Keri Partridge had five kills each while freshman Gabrielle Martin added two.

Caylin Woodward, Christina Estebane' and Christine Edwards chipped in seven kills apiece for the Hawks, who improve to 23-8 overall and 10-0 in league play.

UMES led 8-3 in the first set before the Bison took advantage of several Hawk miscues to climb within one point of the lead. Consecutive kills by Samantha Chukwura stretched the Hawk lead to eight midway thru the stanza before Johnson closed the set for UMES, 25-19.

Partridge had three kills in the second set, helping the Bison to a tight knit second set with the Hawks. The Tennessee native had two kills to put HU within one point of the lead at 14-13, but UMES stretched the lead to five and later took the 25-20 victory.

The Hawks rattled off six straight points midway thru the third set and coasted to a 25-14 win.

Howard will regoup for the MEAC Tournament, slated for Nov. 13-16 in Hampton, Va.
