Bison Fall Short In Second Day at Pitt Invite

PITTSBURGH, Pa – The HU Bison volleyball team (0-4) continued its preseason play in the Pitt Panther Invitational at the A.J Palumbo Center. Howard faced double upsets by Saint Francis University, Pa (1-2) and Duquesne University (3-0) on Saturday afternoon.

SFU came out big, sweeping Howard with set scores of 11-25, 18-25 and 22-25. With each match, the Bison improved, however the Red Flash kept the game in their hands.

Gabrielle Martin finished with a team-best five kills, while Tosin Elebute recorded four. Jasmine King pitched in with seven assists.

Defensively, Riana Cain continued to play well, notching a team high of eight digs. Meagan Lagerlef followed with five.

The St. Francis battled the Bison with a team effort. The Flash recorded 36 assists off 40 total kills. They gave a good collective defensive effort by getting 36 digs.

For SFU, Lauren Wingard had a game-high of 11 kills to finish with a team-best .588 hitting percentage. Kierstin Kiser gave St. Francis 31 assists in the victory.

Brittany Stambaugh finished the game-high with 10 digs.

In the second match up of the Pitt Invitational, HU played its final game against the Duquesne Dukes. The set scores were 15-25, 17-25 and 11-25.

Elebute played big, getting 16 out of the teams 24 kills, while adding nine digs. Alexis Skinner also finished with nine digs. Stephanie Shultis added 10 assist and six digs. King dished out 11 assists.

The Dukes held their ground with leaders such as Sara Scheirman who tallied 14 kills and eight digs. Taylor Jones had the game-high with 33 assist and eight digs. Patti Abshire had a team-best defensively with 14 digs.

Howard will be back in action at George Washington Univ. on Tuesday, Aug. 30. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
