CROSS COUNTRY OPENS THE SEASON WITH A WIN
DOVER, DEL. (www.howard-bison.com) - The Howard University cross country teams commenced the 2012 season with success as the men's squad topped the Delaware State event with a first place finish and the women's squad came in third.
On the men's side, HU finished ahead of Hampton, The University of the District of Colombia, Delaware State, Maryland Eastern Shore, and Morgan State. Elly Rono, who finished in second place, came in second with a time 15:38 and Giovanu Mowatt followed shortly with a time of 15:51 in fourth place. With a fifth place finish was Aaron Harrison with a time of 16:24, James Carey came in sixth place at 16:28 and Oluwaysayie Durosaga rounded out the HU runners with a time of 17:12 in 16th place.
With a third place team finish was the women's cross country team with 92 points behind Hampton, the 2011 MEAC champions, and Morgan State.
Mariza Diaz came in third with a time of 19:28, Candice German finished in 12th place in 21:19, Cynthia Ruffin completed the race in 21:43 in 16th place, Joy Glimer came in 24th place with a time of 23:27 and Doriean Brody crossed the finish line last with a time of 23:27 for a 38th place finish.
Both the men and women ran a 5K race, which is equivalent to 3.1 miles.
HU returns to the terrain on Saturday, Sept. 15 at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
